Visit our unique exhibition of British Sporting Heroes in the nave of Worcester Cathedral and get into the spirit of the Olympics!
‘Sporting Heroes’, in association with our media sponsors Wyvern - the radio station made for Herefordshire and Worcestershire – will feature up to 60 sports personalities, male and female, from 100 years ago to the present day within 9 major sports – athletics, cricket, football, golf, motor racing, national hunt racing, rowing, rugby & tennis – citing their personal stories and showing the changes in equipment & design.
A fantastic collection of sporting memorabilia relating to each personality, loaned from 6 national sports museums & 3 private collectors (including racing cars, David Beckham’s boots, the replica Ashes & 3 Cheltenham Gold Cups!) will be exhibited alongside graphic displays.
All this in aid of Worcester Cathedral, to encourage the community to view this wonderful building as a communal space, to draw in a wider audience and to contribute towards the upkeep of this national treasure.
The Dean, the Very Rev’d Peter Atkinson said: ‘We are very excited at the prospect of another summer exhibition in Worcester Cathedral. This is partly a fund-raising event for the Cathedral. More importantly, it is a celebration of Sport, which is so important to so many people. Sport, at its best, is a force for good in the world, and deserves to be celebrated as God-given. We look forward to welcoming a wide cross-section of the community into the nave of the Cathedral during the weeks of the exhibition. At the same time, the Quire, Crypt and Lady Chapel will be open, free of charge as usual, to general visitors, and our Sunday and daily services
