King John Portrait Competition 2016

The Results

The_Judges_with_the_winning_pictures.jpgThe judges of the King John Portrait Competition Ė Sara Hayward RCA, Francesca Currie and Philip Leach Ė found it difficult to choose between the 60 excellent new portraits forming an exciting new King John portrait exhibition the cathedral.

After much discussion they are now delighted to announce the following winners in two categories:

in the under 18 category (with Great Art vouchers for the artists kindly provided by Great Art):
1st - Bibi Rozier- age 6- St Gabrielís with St Maryís CE Primary School, Hanley swan, Worcestershire
2nd - Olivia Miyoshi Hankinson - Aged 8 - Grimley & Holt CE Primary School, Worcestershire
3rd - Kelvin Coker- age 11- Old Swinford Hospital School, Stourbridge, West Midlands.
Highly commended were also Arthur Tunnicliffe, Kingís School Worcester and Abigail Pickess (formerly Broadwas Primary (now Chantry High School)

In Category 2 for all ages:
1st - Roger Ward, Bromyard, Herefordshire
2nd - Tibor Labancz, Worcester
3rd - Karen Stone, Worcester
Highly commended were also - Mercedes Pearson and Chloe Mills.

The exhibition is open daily in the north quire aisle 9-4pm until Thursday 27 October. Free entry, all welcome.

†As part of a series of events to mark the 800th anniversary in 2016 of King Johnís death and his burial in Worcester Cathedral held a portrait competition through 2016 culminating in an exhibition at the Cathedral in October.

The effigy on King Johnís tomb is said to be in his likeness. What do you think King John looked like? We are looking for a creative, contemporary response to King John which might reflect the times in which he lived and may involve some research.

The portrait competition runs from 28 October 2015 to 17 June 2016. The final results to be announced †on 18 October 2016†(the 800th anniversary of the death of King John). An exhibition of the best entries is on display in the Cathedral until Thursday 27 October 2016.†
